Karnaphuli Tunnel overview
Located in Bangladesh's port city of Chittagong, the Karnaphuli Tunnel is an underwater road that runs beneath the Karnaphuli River. The tunnel accounts for 3.32 kilometers (2.06 mi) of the route's total length of 9.39 kilometers (5.83 mi). 10.80 meters (35.4 feet) is the diameter of the tunnel. More than 17,000 cars a day are anticipated to be able to use this tunnel.
The project is estimated to have cost US$1.1 billion, about half of which was financed by China's Exim Bank. Karnaphuli Tunnel is the first submerged road tunnel in South Asia. It will strengthen the highway system connecting Dhaka, Chittagong, and Cox's Bazar. China Communications Construction Company, a Chinese enterprise, was chosen to build it.
